a stem-wind, pin-set, high-grade, 20-jewel, hunter-style pocket
watch movement made for Tiffany & Co., New York by Adolph Lange. The
serial number on the movement is 5482. The movement design is half plate
(separate bridges for escape wheel and lever). The movement highlights
include: low serial number, removable post for minute wheel, locking
screw for winding wheel over mainspring barrel, matched bright red ruby
jeweling in the time train, gold escape wheel, gold lever, unusual
Breguet overcoil, bi-metallic compensation balance with solid gold
weights, double roller, Geneva stopwork, jewels in gold settings, cap
jewels for the escape wheel, lever, and balance staff, faceted diamond
cap jewel on balance cock, banking pin on lever, hole for banking in
pillar plate, triangular roller jewel in balance arm (instead of roller
table), and most importantly made for Tiffany & Co. This is rare
example of an Adolph Lange made for Tiffany & Co. Dial and Hands:
The dial is original - name on front and matching serial number (5482)
on back. The dial has hairlines but there are no significant cracks or
chips The spade style minute and hour hands with thin straight columns
match in style and color. The delicate seconds hand also matches in
color. Note: The hands are not original. They were fitted and installed
by me. The dial feet attachment method uses a slotted screw for one foot
and a pin for the other. Minute Wheel: The minute wheel is also not
original. It was fitted and installed by me, but is perfectly functional
and matches in style and quality Mainspring: The mainspring that was in
the watch when it was disassembled for inspection is broken . The metric
measurements are 219 and 19 with a length of approximately 20 inches.
The only hole-end mainspring in my collection of mainsprings that has a
hole-end and comparable dimensions is a Waltham #2224A (216 and 16) with
a length of 20 inches. The Waltham mainspring was installed to show that
the watch is complete and operational. The watch ran for more than 24
hours and was less than 10 seconds in error – indicating that the
balance assembly with its Breguet hairspring is exhibiting excellent
isochronal characteristics, in spite of the weaker mainspring (19 vs 16)
– nice job Adolph. (Note: The "original" broken
mainspring will be shipped with the movement for reference and
documentation.. Note also that the weaker mainspring results in less
amplitude of oscillation - but still isochronal.) Note: The low-end of
the stopwork on the mainspring barrel cover was set to three quarters of
a revolution. The high-end has more than a full revolution. Problem: One
of the two screws for the barrel bridge is missing the head.
Fortunately, the barrel bridge has two alignment/steady posts and a nice
tight-fitting screw - more than adequate to secure the bridge as a
support for the mainspring barrel. Originality: Except for the hands,
mainspring, and minute wheel, the movement is all original including ALL
screws. Operational: Since the Lange movement was COMPLETELY
disassembled for inspection, it seemed prudent to clean and lubricate
the mechanism. The movement is fully operational and keeping excellent
time – even with the weaker mainspring. Size: The diameter of the
pillar plate is 18-3/4 ligne (14-size, 42 mm). Summary: This early
Adolph Lange pocket watch movement made for Tiffany & Co. is a nice
collectors’ item and is in a wonderful state of preservation - with
the exceptions as noted above: replaced mainspring, replaced hands, and
a broken head on one of the two screws for the barrel bridge on the
pillar plate |

and operates properly. Turning the watch over the back lid is has a
glass surface and in great condition. Inside is a routinely serviced and
high quality, Jewel manual wind gold plated lever escapement movement
with red Ruby jewel settings. This beautiful wristwatch has the original
movement in an excellent status which was very well saved, considering
age of this watch. It is fitted on a new 16mm black pigskin strap with
chrome steel buckle that is vintage style and goes great with this
